Date/Time - Sat 27 Aug 10:00am - 4:00pm
Over this day we will learn about contemplative prayer and the roots of Christian meditation, Jesus’ call to go into the ‘inner room’, the Desert Fathers, how Christian meditation was rediscovered some 40 years ago and the essential teachings of this beautiful form of prayer. There will be time to meditate, to discover how to pray in a new and fresh way; to find out about the commitment to ‘turning up’ and the importance of the group.
Many of the greatest teachers on prayer were contemplatives. Thomas Merton, Thomas Keating, John Main and Evelyn Underhill are luminaries from the 20th century. Other great writers on prayer over the centuries include Teresa of Avila, John of the Cross, the Cloud of Unknowing, Hildegard of Bingen, Meister Eckhart to name just a few. All looked to the gospels and Jesus’ teachings on prayer as they journeyed into a relationship with God that transcended words and embraced stillness and silence. Explore how meditation leads to self-knowledge, heals those wounds of the shadow and opens us to the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. Come and learn about the World Community for Christian Meditation and the New Zealand Community for Christian Meditation.
Facilitator: Vincent Maire is the Auckland regional coordinator for the New Zealand Christian Meditation Community and an experienced teacher of Christian meditation. He is a novice-oblate of the World Community for Christian Meditation (WCCM) and was recently appointed to the WCCM International Guiding Board. Vincent is the spiritual carer at Harbour Hospice, Red Beach. He is a long-time member of a meditation group that meets weekly at the church of St Francis by the Sea, Whangaparaoa.
